Cycle clothing

No specific clothing is required to ride a bicycle, though a helmet is necessary for safety reasons. In any city you can see riders riding in their regular street clothes, as well as those wearing specific bicycle clothing. This latter category of clothing is designed to offer no wind resistance and to fit comfortably.

Cycle clothing needs to be lightweight and tight fitting, as heavy, baggy clothes act as a dragging parachute as you attempt to propel yourself forward.  Needless to say, in winter, this kind of principle could lead to some very cold riders. The antidote for this is not to wear a heavy jacket, but to add more layers.

Cycle clothing also functions to let the skin dry by transporting sweat to the outside, where it can evaporate while cooling the body minimally and without soaking the clothing.

There are a number of different kinds of apparel that serve these purposes. Specialized shorts, long pants, glasses, gloves, helmets, shoes, boots, rain jackets and jerseys are all available for the interested biker. If you are riding long distances pretty regularly, some of these items might be worth looking into.
