Cycle parts

The main categorical parts that make up a cycle are: the frame, the drive train and gearing, the steering and seating, the brakes, the suspension, and the wheels. Within these categories, the parts become more complicated and particular. However, axles, ball bearings, cables and cog sets are all necessary for a bike to run smoothly.

Efforts have been made to make parts more interchangeable, though different kinds of bikes use different parts. For example, road bikes use drop down handlebars to improve aerodynamics and speed, while a more leisurely city bike might not feature these handlebars.

Some cycle parts, such as the basket and the bottle cage, are not strictly necessary but might be beneficial. Other parts, such as rear generator lights, are only necessary if you plan to ride your bike in the city at night.

Cycle parts can usually be found at your local cycling shop, where you can also find experts to help guide you to whatever it is you seek. If, for example, you have an uncomfortable seat, you should be able to find a better one at the cycle shop without having to buy an entirely new bike.
